In addition to my Airwaves 2014 live coverage, I shot a short series of band portraits! It started with a simple the idea to photograph one band a day whenever I had time. One pink background, five days and 16 bands later, here are some of my favorites!
Technical Notes
I wanted this series to feel colorful, vibrant and really jump off the page. I figured a bright pink background would do the trick!
This was a straightforward, three-light setup. My key light was the Elinchrom Ranger Quadra power pack fired into an Elinchrom Octabank. I used a Yongnuo YN-560 flash fired into a homemade beauty dish for fill. I placed a purple gel over this flash to create interesting color contrast with the pink background. I used another Yongnuo YN-560 flash with a 1/4″ grid that was fired directly onto the background. I did this to make the pink background pop more and to help create separation with the subjects. Everything was triggered using Phottix Atlas II wireless triggers.
I used a Nikon D810 camera mostly paired with a Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8 lens. My settings were 1/200 and f/8 at ISO 100.
End Notes
Thank you to Haukur, Hilmar, Gabríel and all the lovely folks at The Reykjavík Grapevine for letting me set up shop in your office, and for your help coordinating shoots. Thank you to all the bands that participated! Hope you enjoy and see you same time next year!
